<<previous .... ![]() ........It was now clear to me that Bennie liked to fish for trout in the same manner as I did. He'd look for the largest fish for us to challenge and then try to get us into position to convert the opportunity. By his own admission, Bennie was a hog hunter. There are anglers not of this thinking who tell of satisfaction with smaller rewards, but this approach does not motivate me to perform at my best. I feel more comfortable with Bennie's approach. ........We next came to a flat studded with large boulders, some protruding above the surface. There were as many as ten or twelve trout rising simultaneously in a 100 yard stretch. I landed a sixteen-inch brown on the Stimulator and then asked to be dropped on the shore so Chris and I could both fish at the same time. ........Downstream at a bend where the boulders were no more, there were several trout rising near the bank in shallow water. One seemed large and I concentrated my efforts on it. After a few casts, it quit feeding. I switched to a #14 Black Foam Beetle. It accounted for a small brown and a strike from another small fish that I failed to hook. By this time, Chris and Bennie drifted down to where I was and we continued downstream. ........For a while, we fished from the boat. Bennie moved us into position so we could cast to side riffles, breaks along the cliffs where rocks fallen from the face created holding areas on the downstream side and to large submerged boulders. Chris and I had some takes from good sized trout but failed to hook any of them solidly. ........We then came to a place which Bennie called the Hog Hole. At the bottom of this deep pool, the water flowed back upstream in a big, slow back wash. A big brown took my scud dropper. The fish was plainly seen in shallow water before it dove for the bottom. It was on for a couple of minutes and then the hook pulled free. Our bad luck continued at the head of the pool where the eddy met the main current. A sizable cutthroat took a Stimulator, but it was not hooked solidly either. next>> |
